Week Two

School was a little wonky this week thanks to a crazy back injury I endured. Through it all, though, we were able to make a little progress with our lessons. We worked through another spelling lesson, continued our volcano unit study and Dakotah had drum lessons, did some yoga with his sister and spent Friday dirtbiking with his Dad. Overall, it was a super fun week aside from my immobility issues.

On to another week!

Day Five

Today, Dakotah took his final test in Vocabulary and got 100%! Yippee! After yoga, we chilled for a bit and I finished the dishes and tidied up a bit.

Then, we did yoga together. Dakotah thought this was quite funny and giggled a lot. If you've never seen these videos, they are great! The instructor takes kids on adventures around the world as she is performing yoga for the kids. It's fantastic! http://www.cosmickids.com/

We studied volcanoes next. It was so great! We learned five new words today:
  • Extinct
  • Dormant
  • Lava
  • Eruption
  • Basalt

...and then we learned played a short Earth trivia game. We finished our lesson with discussing the inside of a volcano. He wanted to color his own cover for his volcano lapbook. He is so excited about learning, I LOVE it!!!

What an awesome day!

Day Four

After working through our long 'u' vocabulary lessons, we studied about different money around the world. Dakotah thinks it's funny that other countries have colorful money and money with holes in the coins. It was interesting to learn that some countries have important buildings, others have political figures and some even have composers printed on their currency!

Next, Dakotah learned about volcanos! He's been so excited to start this unit study. He learned five new vocabulary words:

  • Core
  • Mantle
  • Crust
  • Magma
  • Metamorphic Rock

Then he learned about the three different kind of rocks:  metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary. He really liked this part and spent extra time in his lapbook.

Last, he drew the different parts of the earth...the crust, mantle, outer layer and core. His excitement about learning something he is so passionate about is intoxicating!

Our hands-on experiment involved boiling an egg and then cutting it in half to see the crust, mantle and core of the 'earth'! He loved this! Then, he ate it. He didn't like that part at all. :)

We finished by snuggling together and reading another chapter in our Charlotte's Web book. I'm hoping to have a math curriculum put together by next week. We'll start Language Arts back up again as well.

I love homeschool! :)

Off to have a great weekend!

Day Three

You What a fun day we had!

After a slow start to our day, we launched right into our Spelling and Vocabulary lesson for the say. Since this is Dakotah's least favorite, it helps to get it done first.

Continuing through our History of People study, we learned about languages around the world. He was shocked to learn the Chinese language has 40,000 characters! Although the kids only have to learn 3,000, he still said that was crazy!

After snuggling with me on the couch while we read another chapter in Charlotte's Web, he took a break to make me a picture on the iPad. I love it!

He wanted to 'scuba dive' in the tub again. It's entertaining for me! I think he spent about an hour in the tub.

After a fun Starbucks date, we picked up Sawyer at preschool and headed to the library. Sawyer chose to learn about cats, seals and zebras and Dakotah chose, of course, volcanoes!

I began working on Dakotah's volcano lapbook. We plan to do a two week study on volcanos. Here is the beginning of the lapbook. He will work through all the mini-books inside. This will be in conjunction with videos and hands on experiments.

After three full days of homeschool, I already see changes I intend to make in our curriculum. I'm excited to see where the next weeks and months take us.

Day Two

Like yesterday, Dakotah was driven to play the drums after breakfast. I love that he is so excited about this new interest.

Today proved to be more of a challenge than yesterday because we had Sawyer with us. She was jealous of my time with Dakotah and that irritated Dakotah. So, spelling and vocabulary was painfully long. We took a rest period afterwards to talk about new rules given our new situation.

I remembered that Sawyer's preschool was having a special 'drop off' day today so I took her there and spent the afternoon with Dakotah. We had Mongolian Grill and went to Barnes and Noble. He got a new book about volcanoes. He is so excited to study all about them! We decided to learn about the volcano currently erupting in Hawaii, Mt. St. Helens and do a few home experiments. After our unit study, we will go visit Mt. St. Helens.

Upon our return home, we completed our discussion on ancestors, race and how people lived over the past 14 million years.

Here he is working on his timeline. This included monkey-like Homo sapiens 14 million years ago, people who look like us 3 million years ago, the first writing 5,000 years ago and Dakotah's birth. He loved this assignment.

We finished the day with chapter 3 in Charlotte's Web and more drum practice.

First 'Official' Day of Homeschool at the Utopian Academy

We woke up excited about our first day of school! Our intention was to begin with spelling and vocabulary but Dakotah wanted to practice his drums right after breakfast. He loves the 'money beat' and continues to experiment with different versions of that.

After drumming, we moved right into spelling and handwriting. While not his favorite topic, we moved through it without any issues. He practiced spelling rule, mule, tube, cube, cure, and sure. We had to review 'sure' because he added an 'h'.

Next, we moved into History and Social Studies...his favorite! I thought this would be a 30 minute lesson and it turned into 90 minutes...by his choice! He asked so many questions and was so intrigued by what we were learning about. I'm using 'Sonlight' but practicing the secular version. Today, we studied in the Usborne Book of Peoples of the World. He learned what a country is, about different money from various countries, that different languages are spoken, different customs and traditions are practiced between countries. He was very interested in handshakes here in the United States and bowing in Japan. We discussed traveling abroad and the need for passports and visas. I talked about the border between Canada and the US and illegal aliens. He was fascinated by the different flags and what the flags meant. His favorites were the United States flag, Japan and Australian flags. He thought the Saudi Arabian flag was interesting because the markings on it are actual words in their language!

The idea of tribal people (such as the Masai in Kenya and Tanzania and the Bedouin in the Arabian Desert) was interesting. He didn't think people still lived this way.

Lastly, we talked about the differences between rich and poor countries and that the United States is a rich country that is industrialized.

He decided he wants to collect items from Germany such as photos, coins, stamps and learning about their food.

We finished our history lesson with a FaceTime call to Auntie Kimiko and Uncle Philipp! They told Dakotah all about their experience to get Philipp's visa to come and live in the United States. Dakotah was most shocked about the $2,000 cost to bring Philipp to the US. (I'm sorry, Kimiko, for the unflattering photo...I honestly thought it was good until I downloaded it!)

We read two chapters from "Charlotte's Web". Dakotah thinks Wilbur is a funny name. I love that he retains so much information after being read to. He learned the words 'runt' and 'untimely' from the book. Personally, snuggling with him on the couch while we read was the best.

After lunch, we moved on to Language Arts. He learned about sorting items into groups and then subgroups. After sorting items into food, clothing, transportation and furniture...he then sorted the foods into bread, fruits and vegetables, the clothing into winter, summer and costumes, etc. After we completed our lesson, he created ground, air and water transportation pictures using the magazine cutouts and his own drawings. He had lots of fun with this lesson! It was a weeks lesson in one day.

Dakotah's dad came over for a bit to hear Dakotah play his drums! It was a fun break. After his dad left, we headed out to the park for some time in the sun and to get his boy energy out. Bike riding, climbing and running helped but the freezing temperature made us come home a bit earlier than anticipated.

He wanted to warm up since we were chilled to the bone so practicing his scuba skills in the warm bathtub seemed appropriate. This gave me some time to sit by him and warm up while getting some work emails out.

After an hour of scuba diving, he got out and we had a snack while we had our science lesson. He enjoyed talking about living vs. non-living things. We did a compare and contrast on the similarities and differences between the two.

Our day couldn't have been more perfect. I'm sure we will change our schedule and tactics as we learn our routines. We are excited for the rest of the week! Sawyer will be joining us tomorrow!

Pre-First Day of Homeschool

Dakotah and I are both very excited to get started on our homeschooling journey. After being withdrawn from public school on October 31, 2014, we took the following week of to 'deschool' and prepare for our new homeschool adventures. During our week off, we Dakotah decided he wanted to learn a bit about cooking. After I chopped the veggies, Dakotah made a delicious Hearty Vegetable Barley Soup. He learned how to follow the recipe and measure ingredients. He also learned that we have to sometimes look up different measurements such as how many ounces in a quart! He loved it! I'm looking forward to my next meal cooked by my talented chef. YUM!
